They’re packing the car,
we’re leaving today,
travelling far
for our holiday.
They scuttle and scurry,
worry and hurry,
fill crannies and nooks
with wellies, and books.
'Are you taking some food?'
"Oh, please, go and play,
be quiet and good,
keep out of our way!"
At last we’ve departed
'Will we get there quite soon?'
"We’ve only just started! –
later this afternoon …"
I sigh, yawn and frown
at drops rolling down
the car’s window pane,
seeing nothing but rain.
'If it rains every day
will we get out to play?
Are there plenty of games
for whenever it rains?'
'I’m queezy, Mum – Why?'
"Don’t read, – Look out-side!,
Shall we all play ‘I Spy?’"
'but there’s nowt to be spied!'
"Well R is for…" 'RAIN!'
"and W* …" 'for WET!'
"and P …" 'that’s for PUDDLE (are we nearly there yet?).'
"A B___ S___ I spy"
'A bit of BLUE SKY!'
"enough for a sailor’s jacket?"
'No! only a trouser pocket!'
"At last! it’s stopped raining,
– and look where we are!
Enough of complaining
we’ll soon leave this car!"
* 'W' is said as 'double-u!'
