As soon as I arrive at her chair
I kneel down and kiss her forehead
and then her hand.
As I look up at her I play
with the idea that she will awaken
from her illness
so long as I act like a Disney prince.
Sonia doesn’t like that sort of thing
Because it’s not happening to her.
‘Is she your girlfriend?’
‘Sonia, you know she’s my mother.’
‘She’s a spoilt brat, that’s what she is.’
I hear Vera whispering to Annie
‘he thinks the world of her’
and as I smile playfully towards her
she points to her cheek with mischief
so I go and give her a kiss too.
‘There’s a good boy.’
It feels like spring and the sun’s out
so I help Mum up
‘Let’s go for a walk, Mum,
it’s beautiful out there’
and she nods obediently.
This is the first time since October
that she’s been out of the house
and with that thought I feel
momentarily overwhelmed
powerless, useless, wicked.
I want to hit myself
So I scrape a knuckle
along the badly painted wall.
The moment we’re outside
she’s off at a different pace
searching for meaning in the trees
on the tarmac path.
Mum has a penchant for earth rods
and inspection covers.
She has a childlike urge to step on these blocks
round the back of Skylark unit
and it’s about the only thing
that she still does this year from last.
‘There it is, Mum, go get it’
and as she closes in on the cover
nudging her foot towards completion
I’m elated that she understands me.
It reminds me of the fun we had last year
and the fun that awaits us in the coming months.
We did two rounds of the care-home
her hand clasped vicelike around my fingers
positioned so they wouldn’t go numb
and as we wandered as light as cotton
I was given a moment of realisation
that a spiritual awakening has come
from just accepting today as a gift
and how all I can do is love her
for all the times she saved my life.
To know that I took on life as a war
that it meant little more than death
and that those days were over
was wonderful.
