A Day of Darkest Despair

I’ve had some bad days,
But none of them compare to yesterday.
Three hours on the window sill,
With a bottle of Jack Daniels egging me out;
A lack of courage holding me back.
Waking up with a raging thirst
After a pharmaceutical binge
That I believed
Would have killed a horse,
I opened a bottle of red.
Three hours seem like three days
When sleep is a stranger
And nothing will bring the coma on.
When the one I love returned,
Unannounced, but not unexpected,
I responded with violence.
A telephone call
She would not answer,
And a refusal to say who had called
Provoked me.
I grabbed her by the hair
Punched her in the face,
Then went back to the window sill
The police arrived;
I waited,
The police left.
I remained on the window sill,
But today I’ll take that step
To make amends for that punch.
