Overheard in a Post Office queue –
“We’re off to Majorca, what about you?”
“Tunisia” – a big, wide smile,
[“Get away from the work and the grind awhile” —
Sunshine and clubs, lazing and pubs?]
What about me? Am I envious? No!
I’m hugging inside a thrill of my own –
excitement which these may never have known:
a prospect exciting, surprising and humbling
unexpectedly tumbling
into my lap:
cliffs and fresh air, a rest that is rare
no aeroplane travel, but another world
of pleasure unfurled.
Not the height of luxury,
not everyone’s ‘cup of tea’ –
(we’ve forgotten the tea bags!
Stop the car, –
there’s a Spar!)
Down the north peninsula of Wales we wend
our way, to a little side lane near to the end,
a static home there, with a view before
of field, sheep, sea, and the cliffs of the shore,
a glimpse of Bardsey, and a red-ball sun
sinking, slowly setting,
down into the ocean settling,
Cliff paths with cushions of pink-starry thyme,
jellyfish stranded on sand where they landed,
kale amongst pebbles, and on a cliff-face –
hang like a curtain, the flowers like lace.
No shop for 3 miles!
well we’ll have to make do –
we’re on holiday now,
just me and you!

HI Rhiannon
We used to spend our holidays in Norfolk - for much the same reaqson as you - the in-laws lived there and we needed to be near to help them. They had carers, but when we went, the carers had a break. But we had some lovely holidays there.
