THE CRIME OF RHYME

way back in time
twas thought sublime
to rhyme when writing poems

the poet's thoughts
with rhymes were fraught
the words found friendly homes

the rhymes were placed
and interlaced
it kept one on their toes

but nowadays
there seems a craze
to make up poems with prose

oh sure, they're good
that's understood
but really, i just can't

i love to rhyme
and make words chime
to give those poems a slant

there'll be a day
it's on its way
when prose will rule the world

and all the schools
will make up rules
that rhymes won't be unfurled

the poet that
defies that act
will be an outlaw then

but trust in me
illegally
to make rhymes with my pen

but as for now
it's still allowed
and might be for some time

but i have vowed
to still stand proud
when rhyming is a crime
