A spirited walk

The night was damp the air was cold They walk among us, we were told. A guided walk through City streets We could by chance a spirit meet Our guide this evening looked the part Long coat, Hat and Cane, quite smart Some stories he would shortly tell Some made up but others, well. His voice was gentle, smooth and deep He told us all that we should keep Close together, do not stray Lest there be a price to pay We wandered out into the night Hoping that we’d get a sight Of apparitions out of walls Or maybe screams or ghostly calls We didn’t have to wait too long Not a scream but distant song A child maybe or someone older Then suddenly we all felt colder A mist had fallen all around No longer could we hear the sound In fact we heard no sound at all Silence, that’s all. The silence didn’t last too long In my mind I heard the song The mist had gone the sky was clear Our guide was all that we could hear Tales of murder through the ages Children sold as slaves in cages Those that died both young and old Tales to make your blood run cold Somewhere near a clock chimed ten Normal sounds came back again Our guide spoke in a chilling tone You’ll soon be home but not alone I strode along behind our guide He didn’t walk he seemed to glide Something here was not quite right Could there be one final fright The door closed as we stepped inside Looked around but saw no guide His long Coat, Hat and cane there lay In a case used for display. No one spoke, what could you say? Our guide it seems, drifted away A gentle laugh then all went cold They walk among us. Yes, we were told.

Good one The Royster. I
Good one The Royster. I would prefer it to be presented in a more conventional form for a poem though.
