Do you remember us?
We slept within you for years. Decades.
We were born and read to at night
About beginnings of endings on beds beneath your windows
We listened to the clocks ticking on your wall
Absent mindedly.
Do you recall?
The timbre of our voices laughing, shouting, weeping
In your doorways
Of our feet thundering up the stairs or pacing the floorboards
On long dark nights
The music we played that gently shook your foundations
the fires we accidentally lit that could have consumed you?
But it was you, over time, who consumed us, up to the point that
you were all we imagined
could be; but
Then suddenly you are
Still there and we are not
Thinking of
The place
We have
left.
