Dear Anyone...

My emptiness has a lake in it, deep
and watery, with several temperaments.’
Mary Landau
He’d fixed the head gasket on my car...
and adjusted the thingy makes the fan turn.
He’d oil on his hands, and smelt of roll-
your-own Woodbines. After that
I invited him round when my parents
were out, and we’d talk about this, and that;
he’d ask me what I wanted from life; what
did I want to be...achieve? Did I have feelings
for him?
I thought about hedgehogs – how he’d rescued
one. Made it a home in a cardboard box – reached
in every day to see if it was still breathing,
feed it whatever it is hedgehogs eat. He was
a bit like that with me. Treated me like glass,
as if afraid I’d break at the least little knock,
as we’d chat about the how, the why, the where,
and the when...things I knew so much, and
so little of.
And all I really wanted him to do
was to take me to Blue-Water Lagoon...where
the old gravel pits used to be. I’d be wrapped
in just his tatty donkey-jacket, courtesy
of the CEGB of many moons ago, and he’d
rip it off me, and then I’d notice a spot of blood
on his sleeve, and the penny would drop
like a bomb on an Easter Parade.

A very evocative piece,
A very evocative piece, starting with a touch of youthful rebellion, reveling in discovery. The last stanza is interesting in that retrospectively, she sees that she would assume the wisdom of hindsight.
Sorry if I've got it all wrong, but I like the feel of this poem. It's got that element of danger that was exciting, but with the benefit of hindsight, you can now appreciate was perhaps not such a great idea at the time.
Enjoyed.
ps. Should it be, 'the thingy (that) makes the fan turn.'?

Hello Tina,
Hello Tina,
Yes, an intriguing poem, but I'm obviously being a bit dim here as I don't get the significance of the spot of blood but when it is followed by such a powerful image as 'Like a bomb on an Easter Parade' those words suggest it is very important. Sorry Tina but you know poetry is not my strongpoint but I liked it enough to want to understand it.
