same year’s eve

i don’t know about you,
but i’ve always found
“New Year’s Eve” to be
such a bunch of bullshit---
no other holiday seems to hold such an
obligation,
where forced fun is
concerned.
whether you are already face down in the
toilet,
puking your fucking guts out,
or parading around with your new love
talking about how
“this year everything is going to be different!”
or perhaps you’ve already got that list of resolutions
all typed up,
secretly having convinced yourself that you don’t have
to start until tomorrow &
perhaps you go one more,
telling yourself that you can binge on whatever you will
change
(kind of like that husband who fucks his fiancé’s best friend
the night before the wedding),
the fact remains,
this all means something to you, right?
news flash,
there’s a reason that you are still fat---
because the plan fell through last year,
just as it will this one &
news flash,
there’s a reason you’re still at the same goddamned job---
it’s because no opportunity showed itself in this
grandiose economy, just about the same time you gave up
looking &
guess what, it ain’t gonna be any different this time around.
for the lonely,
who kept from pulling the trigger
through the birthday of that fictional character that the world
thinks is gonna come back,
they have to sit one more night alone,
before walking the streets of this nation that
finally will have to give up its two weeks of fucking euphoria &
come back to reality---
kudos to them for
sticking it out
(whatever keeps them ticking is stronger than
the typical collective american orgasm
that everyone seems to have at this time of year).

Hi delapruch.
Hi delapruch.
This shouts with attitude from a 'realist' point of view - opening with an obsevation regarding the obligation for forced fun in celebration of what is unlikely to be any different to the previous situation, the reasoning behind the thoughts fully explained in the last stanza. A reminder that despite well intentioned resolutions, many have given up before they start, and for others it is beyond their control to do anything to better their situation. Very well expressed. I would just make one suggestion - please ignore if you think I'm wrong, but I would lose the opening line,'I don't know about you but..' and start with - 'I've always found...' But that's probably just me.
Much to think about here - enjoyed reading.

Poignant response Bee... I
Poignant response Bee... I liked the realism too. Not quite my style of poem, but it expressed the tone and meaning of the writer concisely.... hope that in the searching for a better answer delapruch, you share your results with us. Have a non-forced, excellent 2014 $
