In Praise of Winter

Some people have no poetry in their soul.
They vilify the winter months as a season
that’s uninspiring; say it should be our goal
to emigrate - if we haven’t lost our reason -
to warmer climes, at least for the duration.
I can’t stand anyone so blatantly philistine
that they cannot show their appreciation
for one aspect of Nature that’s just fine.
Who fails to enjoy the fall of pristine snow
and the scope it offers to an expectant kid?
A snowman will be built and put on show;
down a slope on a sledge a child will skid;
skaters will slide, and fall, on frozen lakes
and people of all ages exchange snowballs.
A virgin cover, caused by a cascade of flakes,
will last, perhaps, until the spring’s rainfalls.
I shall ignore the detractors’ dire monitions
that the glacial months are doom and gloom
and rather relish those hibernal conditions
from inside my triple-glazed warm room.

Hi Rhiannon. Each season has its attractions and we can all enjoy the variety that Nature offers. I am a Summer person in the main but can appreciate the beauty of Winter. I like brisk walks in snow-covered lanes but if the conditions are extreme, a view from my room is the preferred option, as the last line clearly implies.

You have painted a wonderful picture of winter and explored the negative attitudes towards it. I am a winter person, not so much for the drizzly grey stuff, but the crisp frost and snow you speak of - I enjoy that. And I enjoyed your poem, too.

People's attitude towards the seasons vary a lot. Personally I find each one fascinating and, though a preference for a warm climate, I do appreciate the beauty and calm tranquillity of winter, even if the last throwaway line seems to suggest otherwise.

To live in a place where the seasons never changed would not suit me at all,  which is why I love England so much.

Jenny, I am really pleased that I was able to set a winter scene to which you can relate. Obviously if the landscape did not vary, life would be monotonous indeed. I appreciate that you find England amenable in respect of the changing seasons and you can take delight in the multifarious aspects of the natural world.
