The Colour Red

Why’s learning the names of colours
so important? When you’re a kid 
there’s loads of stuff importanter
than that. I like smells best – they 
speak for themselves; like the air 
early in the morning at the park...
reminds me of my sheets when 
I snuggle down in them at night; 
oh, and my mum’s long, soft hair. 
 
Then, there’s the way my dog smells
when he comes back from a walk – all
bonfires and pine-trees...only if he's not 
rolled in fox-pooh, of course. I was going
to say the other word, but Dad says shit 
is a no-no.  Grownups can say it, but then 
grownups can say anything they like.  
 
And getting back to this colour thing... 
can’t stand the colours of my room. Brown 
and yellow make yuk!  Mum says it’s not brown
it’s called Cafe au Lait and the yellow’s not yellow
it’s Buttercup Delight, according to her. They 
don’t seem too fond of each other much, either...
the colours, I mean. Just a kind of feeling I get 
when I’m in there, as if the ceiling and walls 
are yelling at each other. 
 
I suppose there’s one good thing though
about the walls being brown; it hides 
a multitude of sins, and my squashed
bug collection sure is coming on a treat
behind the headboard of my bed...but 
I’d like to bet, it’s the colour red they’ll see 
if they discover it. Correct me, please,
if I’m wrong.

This sounds as if it's based on some real memories. Enjoyed the thoughts about smells, - and colours! I remember realising that some children can match colours well, just can't get round yet to remembering which word goes with which one! Rhiannon

Hi Tina, 

this poem put a smile on my face,  smiley  especially that last stanza about the bug collection and the parents if they found out would see red.

A fun read that made me think of my own son and the strange colours he liked when he was a teenager,  he loved a bedroom painted with dark blue and black walls.  But now he likes every wall to be white, light and airy.
