A TALE OF TWO

a pair grows old together
and it does no good to lie
there is a thought, unspoken
which will be the first to die
.
it doesn't seem surprising
each would choose to exit first
for being the last standing
surely has to be the worst
.
so often it will happen
that when one has passed away
the other goes within a year
a month, perhaps a day
.
for there will be no solace
in their singularity
for ages it was "us"
instead of simply "you" and "me"
.
in duos, there is confidence
when solo. just despair
that's when the love of life expires
evaporates in air
.
in new york stood two towers
when the first had come undone
the second also slipped away
in mourning for the one

any actuary will tell you those in couples live longer and are stronger.

felt this very poignant, esp the last stanza. Some very loving couples, though struggling, do manage to continue after bereavement, by God's grace. Rhiannon
