Gives it up for the morphine –
for the nurse –
treads, black-stockinged
through her mind...
 
leads her to her garden
where she’d tried, so many times
to bury her thoughts, like seeds
into the ground,
 
where she’d trained the horses
pulled the ploughshare...and the land
flowed through her veins...life’s blood – 
stitching her in place   
 
for the night she’d just slept through
without waking...
 
for the critters
in her loft, the ones with
hobnail boots on.
 
Gives it up for the zing
of the shower on her body
first thing 
 
and for the soft,
soft coat of her dog – needs
a pre-breakfast hug
 
and his wet, black nose
as it tickles her toes...
 
for the privilege 
of being the one takes him
for his walk today...
 
albeit just a turn
around the garden
 
Gives it up for the thud
of the daily on her doormat...
 
gives it up for the sheer joy 
of being able to feel
just that...For
 
the discombobulated nonsense
of it all, and the dizziness
of daisies newly sprung
on her lawn today.  For
the genesis...
 
Gives it up for god, if when
she lays her down in her bed, tonight
it ends this way; with reason
to wake again, 
 
in this world,
or the next, and to hell
with the great divide.

Hi Tina

This is beautiful and sad and hopeful at the same time. So much of your writing has a medical/dying sort of theme and the joy of life that wants and needs to continue.

It made me think of when my sister gave up having chemo so she would be well enough to go to her son's graduation ceremony. And of course, that was the beginning of the end for her.

Jean - my heartfelt sympathies to you.  I am so sorry about your sister.

I can only thank you for reading this.  

My late daughter was not only an inspiration to me, but many others that she met during her long battle with cancer. Only a few months before she passed away, in her capacity as senior lecturer at the Hertfordshire medical school, she visited various hospices, and gave help and advice on 'living with cancer' to the residents there.

Sad, but triumphant. Love the way it's pared down to the essential.

Lovely to say out loud. And I thought this was beautiful -

the discombobulated nonsense
of it all, and the dizziness

The dizziness of daisies - I wish I had ever thought of that.

Jean your words are special - thank you, so much.  Without my writing it would have been almost impossible to cope with that initial feeling of total loss, and now, as the years pass, as they do, those memories you mention become ever more precious.
