Brecon Beacons Climb

Misty layers of mountain folds,
tramping higher, new views inspire,
and give excuse to pause, turn round,
to stare, lift eyes up from the ground,
and drink it in before more slog
(look down, keep clear of holes and bog),
until arriving at the top
– breath-taking spot for picnic-stop!
Skirting round the plateau edges,
watching walkers far below,
and forest deep and dark, asleep.
Progress good, until perplexed,
(scan directions, – what is next?),
where is this elusive turn?
we’ll have to leave the path to worm
up and round through grassy clumps,
in spongy humps, that dip and trip,
slipping, sliding in the slope,
hard on ankles, have to cope,
until a proper path is found,
(– storm-tossed sailors reach firm ground).
Then, down, down, down to the lake mysterious,
(take care with those knees, as a twist could be serious!)

Hi Rhiannon
Hi Rhiannon
This is such a lovely poem - in terms of making the reader experience the event with you.
My son went to Pontypridd University, and I think we went walking in the Brecon Beacons on an occasion when we went to visit him. But I can't remember that much about it, so it can't have been such an exciting walk as this one was.
