The Process

I. I deleted your texts
I blocked your number
I threw out all the pictures
I donated your jacket to Goodwill
(and didn’t check to see if your scent still lingered)
I unfriended you on Facebook
I unfollowed your blog
I removed you from my life
II. I stopped talking about you to my friends
I think about you all the time though
I stopped tagging you in funny posts
But I know you would’ve laughed
I quit writing you love letters
However, there’s six haikus in my journal about your eyes
I stopped singing every love song for you
I’ve started the process
III. I imagine you hold me when I sleep
I remember the way you hummed to me so I’d relax
and stop thinking so much
I hum the same tunes while I think
I still wear that perfume you love
I can’t eat popcorn anymore
(I know it’s your favorite)
I actually still write love letters to you
on my phone in the form of text
I haven’t actually sent any of them
even though I still remember your number…
The process is harder than I thought it would be.

This poem being an ongoing
This poem being an ongoing love letter demonstrates how long and difficult the process is. The switching back and forward sounds so familiar, too - like two steps forward - one step back. As long as it stays like that, we keep moving forward, I guess. I really like your poem, it's one so many will relate to.
