Late January Morn

The snow – melting underfoot;
clouds, reluctantly, succumb 
to an incumbent sun 
 
as dawn
warms the air – floats in
close and calm. 
 
All that barks, bays, tweets, 
creeps, croaks or cries...
 
power lines, pylons,
field, furrow and hedge –
 
kitted out in a wintriness
of snow – itch to shake it off,
so heavy it lays.
 
A hungriness of siskin alight
on a  eucalyptus tree – chattering
flames of yellow that dart
from leaf to leaf,
 
twig to
twig – 
bend and yet, 
somehow
take their weight. 
 
Above my head
in a mackerel sky,
the roseate hue
 
of the line
of a ladder
of a silken scar –
 
the smoky breath
of a first jet out of Luton
severs night
from day.

What a lovely picture you draw in such noticing different details! Do you have such snow at present? I know much of the country does, but we havent, just a sharp cold, fresh wind. I'm not sure I have ever seen siskin. Hope you are warm inside! Rhiannon

Hello there, Rhiannon.  We had a slight dusting this morning, hence the poem.  I was out early feeding the ducks, and my goodness, was it cold.

We get quite a lot of siskin around here.  Tiny, yellowish and black birds with forked tails, that always flock together.  I think they are of the finch family, but I might be wrong.

So pleased you enjoyed this...and yes, I'm warm, thank you, and I hope you are too.  Thank goodness for central heating.smiley

You're right Tina, siskin are finches.  I tried to put a picture of one here but was unable to do it and the link looked really odd too.  Hey ho.

I guess if the truth be known, the start of every school year is a bit of a challenge, but I am sure with a little help of Him up there, you will rise to that challenge;-)

Hi Tina, I loved the elusive and ethereal feel to the poem - felt the freshness all cut through with the solid reality of power lines and warm clothes - the ending bringing us back to reality. It all came together as such a vivid picture - cleverer the more you read it. 

I used to have siskins where I used to live, but that was in an area of pine forest. Now I hardly ever see the little things as I live where there are mostly deciduous trees. I loved the mention of them in your poem - brought back more memories than just the birds.

Hi there, Bee, and a good Sunday morning to you.  Good gracious though!  Just looked at the time and it should be 'good afternoon'.  Don't know where the morning's gone.  Mind you, I've spent half of it sorting out the controls of our TV for my husband.  He's glued to it, watching Andy Murray in the Opensmiley

Pleased you felt the atmosphere I was endeavouring to convey in my little poem.  It is so very rewarding, as you will know from experience, only too well.

 Love your poem, as usual. The only lines I would change would be ones describing the heavy snow on the hedges. I think that "itch to peel off their heavy coats" might sound better. Any who, I like the descriptive winterscape you have painted. I particularly like the closing lines of the poem. You provide a satisfying closure to the poem.
