Amber glow lights pave my way
Dazzling shards of blue and green
Bright red neon lights glisten and shine
Amber leaf smoke rises in swirls
Cascades in dimming light
The drummer licks the snare
Then continues to belt out a uniform beat
On some Congo drums
BA Da Da
Ba Ba Ba
Da Da De
A Hammond keyboard accompanies the sound
thumping and bumping the bass drum in the back ground
A cornet bright pitch is heard
Melodically playing in minor 5ths and 3rds
The saxophone flits and starts
Trilling and riffing what a beautiful sound
A rival with no other the vibes and sounds
Of the cities underground kids
Breaking new ground
I’m there in the corner of this low key jazz bar
There’s laughter and chatter and a real good atmosphere
Drinks are pouring waiters calling a scantily clad girl
Blows me kisses from a stool at the bar
The music now hits fever pitch
The rhythm is mesmerising lickty split.
The cook makes the best gumbo in town
Lights down candles lit
This place is seriously sick.
A solo set from a serious cat sounding like charley Mingus
Plucking the bass strings everything’s hushed
As I watch from behind bobbing heads
A siren voice breaks out reminiscent of Sarah Vaughn
The music’s hypnotic and carries my tapping feet down
Green Dolphin Street with sounds from the underground
Leaning back in my chair I have now arrived
At bar 56 on 105th st
west south side new york
in the twightlight of summer nights
at the best place in town
The devilish vibes devour your very soul
My mind is still present but I’ve sold my soul.
