One More Stone Lad

One more stone lad he cried
Then we’ll finish for the day
One more stone lad hurry up now
Bread and wages, bills to pay
One more stone lad
Just another yard or so to go
One more stone lad, knuckle down son
Gaffers going to dock our pay
One more stone lad
Drovers soon will be passing by
Shepherds flock needs place of shelter
One more stone lad, come on try
One more stone lad
Watch its grit-stone ribs expand
One more stone lad, we’re nearly done now
Soon we’ll reach the Promised Land

Gives a real feel of the grit
Gives a real feel of the grit of hard labour, and pressing on what seemed like beyond the possible ( a bit like marathon runners keeping going beyond the pain threshold, but hard physical labour must be something much more). And gives a feel for the place. Rhiannon

Isn't it always one more
Isn't it always one more stone? The grind of hard labour.

I hear this, as each piece of a drystone wall: chosen, napped, tapped into place, marks a space on the land. Good. xxxxxxx
