Chapter Four
Conquest of Chimera
Hours passed like minutes as Kian and Kia played tag with the sky and teased the cloud field with their wingtips. Mythic dreams of flight of boundless freedom flooded their hearts and anesthetized their fears.
Intoxication and gratitude eventually overcame them. They were children playing at their father’s feet. Such was their delight and new -born naiveté. Whoever, whatever brought them here, gave them each other, the sky-heaven must surely love them. These gifts could never come from malice or ill intent, could they?
“We live in an egg.” Kian said, after finally prying his eyes away from his new bride and looking down at their new home a dull the white ovoid hanging effortlessly above the cloud field. “Someone has an obvious sense of humor.”
“What.”
“Birds hatch from eggs, grow up and take flight.”
“And here we are their little birds,” Kia said, “yes that is funny,” she then leaned back swooping away from Kian cork screwing toward the egg to take a better look. Kian swerved down right behind her.
“Somehow I thought our new home was on a cliff or mountain top or perched atop some giant ceramic stalk.” Kian said as fluttered down beside her. “Huh, they haven’t conquered gravity they’ve dismissed it.”
“They must be Gods,” The words slipped past her lips like a murmured prayer.
Kian glanced at her. She glanced back and changed the subject. “Maybe there are others.”
Kian blinked as if he were just waking up, “what yeah, I hadn’t thought about that.”
She took his hand and slid down the egg’s gently curved surface. They did not stop sliding and searching until they were satisfied there were no other openings, which probably meant no other occupants. The egg was smooth and seamless except for their balcony doorway.
“I guess I’m glad,” Kian said as flapped backward piling up air beneath him.
“Yes Kian it seems we are alone, at least above the clouds, but we are not staying up here, are we.”
“No Kia, I’ll not deprive you. In fact, I intend to give everything I can. What do you want? What can I give right now?””
“Some more,” She said through a spreading smile.
“Breakfast?”
Her shoulders slumped as she tilted her head.
“Ooh, this is our honeymoon, isn’t it.”
She nodded eagerly grabbed his hand darted back up to the balcony.
