What We Had

She and I were “We” for a while
Her smile was my morning coffee for a while
A kiss followed every “hi” and “bye” for a while
For a while, the world’s population was two
A beach sand heart embraced our initials for a while
“My house” evolved into “Our home” for a while
My cat had an extra person to ignore for a while
For a while, people cringed at the sight of us
My couch sunk a little deeper on Sundays for a while
My favorite coat was her hug for a while
The line “I hate you” was a joke for a while
For a while, we saw other people
I woke up with too much blanket on me for a while
Terrible singing didn’t come from my shower for a while
Breakfast actually tasted good for a while
For a while, all I wanted were overcooked eggs
Back together, we found love for a while
What we had was no longer past tense for a while
We thought the world was finally on our side for a while
But for a while, was all we got.

This is very good. I love the repetitiveness and the line "my coat was her hug for awhile". It makes me feel so sad. Breakups are hard.

Really enjoyed this. Some of your lines really stood out for me. For example, "My couch sunk a little deeper on Sundays for a while". Also loved "I woke up with too much blanket on me for a while." Great job!
