Dear God who made the heavens
the firmament on high,
the purple-headed mountains
verdant meadows – there to lie,
the lion, the lamb, the tiger –
in forests, burning bright;
dew to sparkle hedgerows
the moon and stars at night.
 
Gave us grain to feed our hunger
the sun to shine aloft
to warm this earth You gave to us
with rain to swell the crops,
rivers, streams and waterfalls,
the cove, the creek, the copse,
so in the name of sanity,
why plague our lives with wasps?

A wasp-like sting in the tail to this, Tina!
But truly, I think wasps are said to do a lot of insect mopping up from our gardens in feeding their young and some pollination service, but it is the love of the adults in late summer for the sweet stuff we eat that seems to gather them around our picnics and bins … their nests are so lovely, but we'd prefer they'd build them away from our homes! You got me wondering what else they sting, and I think from what I looked up, they sting their insect prey sometimes. Rhiannon

Hello there, Rhiannon, and I know you are right about the 'good' that wasps do.  It's justs that round here we have a million of them it seems right now...and they are so numerous I am finding it really difficult to gather our blackberries.  It's a case of making a dive for it, bowl at the ready, and just praying I don't get stungsmiley

I'm sure they have a purpose, but they have been my own personal life limiting phobia (through late summer / autumn) since the age of ten, and I have asked the same question.

I share that phobia too, Bee.  If one flies into the kitchen, I'm out of there, for good, unless I can find someone to do the necessary.  I've been stung quite a few times, and I am totally terrified of the things.sad

A wasp stung my baby boy on the hand on Saturday. It's hard to have sympathy when your sweet golden haired child is crying with hurt and pain and a swollen hand.

On the other hand, this is a lovely Poem.

Ae...I do so hope your little boy, bless him, is totally recovered.  There are loads of the little beggars this year, and as you say, it is hard to see anything positive about them in situations such as yours.
