Negative Spaces

We went for a walk in the negative spaces

took a line out of time

into the two dimensional forest of word silhouettes

tree cigarettes

whispered confessions

 

your body curves around her

soft sleeping curves

sighs tucked in pages

and bookmarked moments

 

somewhere I didn't listen to my heart

didn't listen to her whispers

and now

your wedding ring

all the joys a home can bring

and now a friend I'll never know

 

all the negative space

holds wishes and regrets

No sorrow

we can play it all out

an alternate reality

i love my alone too much to share it

but if we carried that burden

i would dust off my stories and whisper them to you

we go for a walk

in the negative spaces

our stories in the margins

our stories erased

 

i see your hat and your headphones and know

it's not too late to say goodbye

it's not too late to hide in a bathroom stall and cry

clean of graffiti

don't tell them I'm high and hiding

because you might never notice how much I miss you already

standing right in front of me

I'm left waiting in the negative space

crying in a bathroom stall

realizing how something just clicked and tumbled in my heart when I saw your hat and headphones on the desk

it was all the things I'd never said

so go home
