First day
into unfamiliar rooms
smelling of paint and books and milk.
Seeing strange faces staring.
Simple tasks confusing.
Needing a wee but not knowing
where to find the loo.
Hang your coat and bag here -
this is your peg - the nameless one.
Leave your toy in your bag.
This is where you put your lunch.
Your drink - in here.
Raise your hand
Choose a book
Sit down.
Away from loving arms,
understanding and smiles.
Your needs have to wait -
set times to play, to go outside
and breathe fresh air
Little feet -
conform and follow, do as you're told
walk away from warm mother
into school's rigid cold.
