Life Lessens

Seems like yesterday
you caught me by the wrist
in the school hall.
But you only laughed
as my fist uncurled
my treasure -
Back-eyed White, stolen
from the science lab -
Please Sir, I saved her?
You allowed escape
on that occasion, let me
off without detention,
but I permitted myself to be recaptured
a couple of years later - an experiment,
but we were inseparable -
till all of a sudden, you released me
again.
I accepted it at the time,
but later learnt how you'd succumbed
to a terrible malignancy -
just like my Stolen Treasure - gone.
And I'm afraid life might be
far too long under
unfavorable circumstances.

Hi Bee
Hi Bee
What's black-eyed white? I was thinking kitten, but you would hardly have that in a science lab. And the usual frogs don't seem to fit - but maybe a white mouse.
But of course your poem is about much more than that, and it is very lovely.#

it gets very ambiguous towards the end (in good way) doesnt it. Double meanings essential and very well put to use.

Can only ditto what's been already said, Bee. An intriguing piece of writing.

Something magical and elusive
Something magical and elusive about this, Bee. Events in the schoolyard stay with us. In different ways.
