There once was a cat. A very kind, courageous and quick witted sort of cat with piercing blue eyes; a grey stripy coat, a long tail and whiskers, brass buckled shoes and a three cornered hat.
His name was Christopher Cat or Kit-Cat for short and he lived in a little stone house in the middle of an enchanted forest.
It had once been the house of an old couple who, unable to have a child, had adopted him while only a kitten and raised him just like a human boy; fed him and clothed him and taught him to read and write and do everything else that a human boy could do but when they had passed away Christopher had inherited it and so lived there all alone with just the twittering birds and little animals of the forest for company.
Most of the time it was a very quiet and rather lonely life; sometimes however Kit-Cat found himself in some very remarkable and strange adventures.
One day, for example, Kit-Cat was taking a stroll through the forest when, suddenly he started to get a funny tingling in his whiskers.
Now, whenever Kit Cat's whiskers started to tingle like that it usually meant there was trouble coming and so, seeing a big oak tree nearby, he quickly ducked behind it.
Then, not a moment later, peering out from behind the trunk of the tree Kit-Cat saw a troll coming through the forest carrying a big sack slung over one shoulder and something inside the sack was squirming and struggling to escape.
"Be still, you!", said the troll to the thing in the sack, "I'm taking you home with me to be my supper and theres nothing that you can do about it".
Feeling sorry for who or whatever the Troll had captured, Kit Cat decided to follow it and then, when Kit-Cat had followed the Troll, creeping upon tip-toe, all the way to its cave, it saw the troll put down the sack and start to prepare a fire under a big cauldron, saying as it did so,
"Ho! Ho! Now, I'm going to make you into a delicious stew!".
While the Troll's attention was focussed upon its cooking pot however, Kit-Cat crept stealthily up to the sack and, untying the rope that bound it, let out the thing that was inside.
To kit-cats surprise he saw that it was a little girl with long blonde hair, a pretty pink gown and a small golden crown upon her head.
"Oh thank you", said the Princess.
"Shh!", said Kit-cat holding his furry finger to his lips, worrying that the Troll might hear them.
Then, picking up a heavy stone, Kit- cat put that into the sack instead and then taking hold of the little girls hand tightly he lead her out of the cave and through the forest.
When the Troll was finished preparing his cooking pot however, he picked up the sack to empty it into the pot.
"Oh you're much heavier than I remember", said the Troll, struggling and straining to lift the sack, feeling the weight of the heavy stone inside it and thinking it was the little girl, "Still. I shouldn't complain. If you're that heavy it means you must be big and fat; all the better for eating".
The moment the Troll undid the sack, however, and tipped it over his cauldron, instead of a little girl falling out, the big heavy stone fell out and when it fell into the cauldron it made a gigantic splash that covered the troll in water.
"Garrr!", roared the troll angrilly when it realized that the girl had gone, "Run away will you? Well I'll hunt you down and when I do I won't even bother putting you in my pot. I'll just gobble you up whole".
Then, picking up its spiky club, the Troll started to sniff the ground just like a bloodhound until, picking up the scent of the little girl, it went loping off into the forest after her.
While this was going on however, Kit-Cat , reaching his little stone house opened the door for the little girl and taking her into his kitchen and pulling up a chair for her to sit down he started to make two cups of tea for them.
"I notice that you're wearing a crown", said Kit-cat, "Are you a princess?".
"Yes I am", said the little girl, "Or atleast I was until an evil witch turned me into an ugly beast. Now sadly, only a kiss can break the spell".
"Huh?", said Kit-Cat, confused, scratching his head.
Just then however, they both heard the sound of the Troll outside and he sounded as angry as thunder.
"I've got you now", yelled the Troll, "I know you're in there, little girl and if you don't come out then I'll come in".
Kit-Cat seized hold of an old blunderbuss he kept leaning against a wall.
"Don't worry, Princess", he said, "I'll protect you".
But the little Princess didn't look worried.
"I don't need protecting", she said, seizing hold of Kit-Cat and kissing him upon his whiskered nose, "All I need is one of these".
Kit-cat was astonished but then something even stranger started to happen.
All at once he saw the little girl start to grow, bigger and bigger and as she did she started to change aswell, her skin turning from pale pink into a deep shade of green and her arms and legs starting to bulge with muscles as big as boulders and then, suddenly, to Kit-cats amazement he realised that she was not a little girl anymore but a big green and fearsome looking ogre.
"I thought you said you were a princess?", said Kit-Cat.
"I am. I'm Princess Bogwart of the Ogres", she said in a voice deep and gruff, "And your kiss turned me back into my real beautiful ogreish form".
But then, much to the surprise of the Troll, Princess Bogwart came out of Kit-cats cottage, snarling and snorting, anger blazing red in her terrifying ogre eyes and the moment that the Troll saw her, he turned around and, screaming in fear, ran off as fast as his furry feet could could carry him into the forest.
"I don't know how I can thank you", said the Ogre Princess when Kit-Cat came out to see what had happened, "Unless you'd like to marry me and become my prince charming".
She put her burly green arms around him and squeezed him as tightly as a stuffed toy.
"Oh no!", thought Kit-Cat, "What have I got myself into now?".

this is wonderful, genius story. I love the turn around that the princess ogre thought blonde little girls were ugly beasts! Brilliant, one of my favourite fairy tales. I like Kit Cat too, he is a great hero
