We didn't have the same taste in wine.
I wasn't keen on Hardys,
didn't like it, I tried it -
too spicy and I didn't think
it tasted chocolatey.
Same with Cider, wasnt it.
You liked yours fizzy,
like strongbow
and I liked mine flatter,
more mellow.
I didn't mind Casillero del Diablo
but couldn't get on
with the spicy malbecs and merlots.
Couldn't stomach oaky -
I prefer them berry or vanillery.
We were in agreement with Port,
it should be Ruby not Tawny,
best served with Brandy.
We drank a good deal last year
didn't we.
In that little hotel room,
laughing and hiding cheese outside our room
because it was too stinky.
That felt like the last time you were with me.
You and me.
Laughing.
I bought Hardys Legacy,
the one you said,
opened the bottle to allow it to breathe,
drank a glass, sipped it slowly
but it didn't bring you back
and it was too spicy.
All I'm left with is indigestion
and a whole bunch of unanswered questions.
There were loads I forgot to ask.

the sweet and the sour the
the sweet and the sour the bouquet of forgotten flower, the aftertaste, that's what makes this poem so great.

Such a crock that scent and
Such a crock that scent and taste invoke a person (I used to eat things I hated to feel close to somebody!) but there's definitely something in the ceremony of opening their favourite bottle.
