This is outstanding and yet I still feel I must read it again and again because there will be small things I have missed. I loved the line 'everything in him reached out like a vine.' and the whole structure of it. I looked the word up and it's what you've captured. To some degree or another, it's probably true of so many of us, at some part of our life, because the world is so hard but I can see this is an extreme. Still, I like the old cliche about life and hope and I cling on to it.

We had someone on an overnight stay once who had lived isolated even from his parents for quite awhile. He had broken out of it, and seemed to have settled happily in a friendly, supportive church I think, but I'm not sure if his relationship with his parents had fully opened.

It seems here that the boy's distinctive colouring in the Japanese black-haired environment sparking cruel teasing that triggered his withdrawal, - children and teenagers can be very hurtful to each other and insensitive. Other adults around can sometimes have the wisdom to take younsters to task to see the unkindness and unhelfulness of their attitudes. I like the description of travelling in the Japanese snow. The lyrics and sheet music have been recorded by the Beatles and they had the copy-right I don't know who the owner is now, Michael Jackson is passed too. A famous contempory artist comes in sits in front of the piano for half an hour then "plink" stands up bowing to great applause and retreats from the stage.

Hi Helen

I've been off ABC for awhile - writing a story about my sister who died - so I missed this.

It is very lovely and delicate and somehow vulnerable.

A "box of cats" on the back seat. Have you had a cat in a car? Just one? Terrible. Carries on scratches bites hisses and screams like crazy. Wouldn't really know about kittens though.
