Rich, deep trilling,
chuckles, gurgles twirling,
tickle, thrilling,
short, sharp whistles
mellow whirring,
fluted, languid, stirring
piercing, drilling
through the evening air
invade the ears:
startling, compelling,
invigorate, captivate
the wakened mind that hears.

This is a great poem Rhiannon, it reminds me of all the sounds in our neighbour hood.

Thank you, Jenny. I am one slow to listen, but that evening, after a hot day, this bird (blackbird, presumably, which has such a variety of repertoire) really 'awakened' me as I went out to do some weeding, and my mind kept trying to describe it in words. The photograph is from the following evening, not so bright, but the singing was still there, though there was some competition from a strong wind blowing! Rhiannon

Thank you, Jane. Yes, as I said to Jenny, I'm not a good listener, and more attuned to looking at the detail of nature, but was so glad to have my attention caught to the vivid delights and intriguing, strong variety. I remember you wrote encouraging to listen to the delights of birdsong recently.. Rhiannon
