WRITING ON THE MOVE

I recommend the London bus when seeking
inspiration;
All sorts of human life is there, and folks
of every nation.
All crammed together, talking, texting
Sometimes the noise can be quite vexing
But at the same time, quite productive.
Inactive hours can be constructive.
Listen carefully, observe them well;
Each passenger has a tale to tell!
One day, a
woman with bright saffron hair
And a man arrived carrying a large dining
chair
On a sardine packed bus there wasn't much
room
But folk took no notice and they got off
quite soon.
Then a girl with a seven foot cactus got on
-
And a man with a Python joined further
along.
Not an eyelid was batted, we just sat and
gaped
But huddled together in case it escaped.
All this I wrote down in a spiral notebook
Whilst my neighbours looked shifty and
strained for a look.
There were incidents scary as well as good
fun
Like the day some young lads on the bus had
a gun.
Doors locked, armed police soon surrounded
the bus
But the kids had all scarpered before all
the fuss.
But it made a good story and gave food for
thought-
Though I doubt very much if the rascals got
caught.
This method of writing's not hard to
explain -
Jot everything down and then read it again.
There'll be plenty of rubbish, but a
diamond or two
And at the end of the journey, it's all
up to you.

I always think it's a shame
I always think it's a shame when people have headphones in while they're travelling on buses or trains. You can hear such wonderful and surreal conversations! Very enjoyable poem.

Great fun. I loved the cactus
Great fun. I loved the cactus and python bit in particular. You're right - buses - and trains! - are great places for stories.
