of Thorns and Sweat

[Continuing the hymn-for-Sundays series]

When Adam sinned he had to sweat
– his work a struggle – weed and thorn;
with troubles daily we’re beset,
into sin’s ways we have been born.

When Jesus faced for us the cross
he prayed in agony of sweat,
they mocked him – thorny crown; sin’s curse
he bore for us and paid our debt.

One day we’ll have rich joy and peace,
no troubles, thorns in work we do,        
from sweated labour, full release,
perfect creation – all made new.
