With a cross-nibbed pen, in blobby black

ink, I scratch my message in prescription

script on the back of a supermarket till-receipt

over-writing promises of highest quality at

the very best prices beneath a smartass logo.

 

“The End of the World is Nigh. Yesterday’s

madmen are sane. What is right challenges

imagination. Psychopaths, thieves, cowards

and narcissistic schizophrenics lead us.”

 

Out of paper, I roll it into a tube and seal

it in a plastic Coke bottle and cast my vote

into a faecal coloured river to fetch up on a

post-holocaust beach where there is no one

left to lift it from the Geiger-counting sand

Confused and a little scared I suppose.

We made it through the Berlin blockade, we got past Kennedy's Cuba and Ronnie and Maggies Cruise rockets on Greenham common, but this new guy is different kind of animal.

Great piece of work, Ed.  As you say, we got through all the other various crises, but this does seem different.  Our leaders then were venal and power hungry and bigoted, but - apart from Reagan at the end, and he just started to fade away and was kept in check by Nancy - they were all adults with some notion of the world outside what they saw in the mirror.  And not all of the people around them felt that ideology is more important than survival.  

Grim times, wonderful poem to explore them.

Yes this guy certainly is different. I get the feeling he is just a super rich bigoted idiot who is living out his fantasy just because he can. He's more dangerous than Kim Jong Un I think. I hope those around him can keep him in check before he gets us all killed. Even Nixon was better!

I was a teenager during the Cuban crisis, and I lived a stones-throw from Greenham Common at that time ..... they were scary times, but this is, as you and Philip said, grim. It's the uncertainty. JFK at least had a brain!

And of course my main concern is for the kids and Grand kids.

Nice way of summing it all up Ed. There's a theory that the Universe has a built in protection to protect itself against any planetry society getting to big for its boots. Namely, that the said society will self destruct. Look in your Coke bottle. Cheers.
