The Boy

The sound of the horn drew me from my reverie. I tore my eyes away from the mesmerising waves. It was a beautiful sunny morning. The breeze felt cool as it caressed my bare shoulders. There were rarely any ships at this beach. I'd been here for three months, but this was the first time I'd seen a ship. Well, it was more of a giant ferry - and a party boat at that. I looked at the people streaming out, there was gaiety in the air. Loud music was coming from somewhere within. A gorgeous girl, with hair the colour of the sun itself, staggered out laughing. The pink "bride-to-be" sash hung backwards on her slender frame. The "groom-to-be" staggered out soon after. It was a pre-wedding bash! Out came the friends and family! As they all headed towards the sea, I felt like seizing their boat and rushing back home.
It sucked to be so far away from my family and friends. It sucked to have run away from everyone because I needed to get away after having being stood up at the altar. I was happy for these people who'd unexpectedly showed up at "my" spot, but miserable for myself, when I suddenly spotted a pair of sincere brown eyes.
That's all I could see from where I was. Brown hair, reminiscent of dark chocolate, swayed gently in the wind. He couldn't stop smiling, gazing at the happy people around him, he was truly enjoying every minute of it. He was the only one without a phone. The only one not taking a thousand selfies. Instead he sat there, with his twinkling brown eyes, simply drinking in the beauty of the place. For a minute, I felt like abandoning my favorite spot at the beach and just walking into that ferry and joining him in that moment. I wanted to go out into the sea with him. See his eyes change as he experienced the cold blue water. See him delight in the swell of the waves. I wanted to hold him, and be held. The void in my heart seemed bigger than ever before. Just waiting to be filled.
Before I realized it, I had already walked closer to the partying group. Momentarily distracted, he looked towards me. Our eyes met. It was love at first sight. His tail went crazy as he bounded towards me. He was definitely not with them. Within minutes I was squealing in the sand, wrestling the most adorable chocolate lab in the world. He wouldn't stop licking! How did these boys get to be so cute!
"I'm so sorry, he usually doesn't go crazy over people like that." I sat up with a jerk as the lab got off me and in a twinkling had his paws over the most gorgeous man I'd ever set my eyes on. He had sincere brown eyes, gorgeous brown hair, an easy smile, no phone, and was smiling down at me indulgently. I'd met two amazing boys all in one day. Not too bad for homesick girl !
"I hope you don't mind me playing with your dog, he's adorable. What's his name?" "Rufus." Rufus grinned at us indulgently.
"Would you like to go for a spin into the sea? I own the boat here. That's my best friend getting married."
I sighed. Life can change in a heart beat. I said yes to him. I said yes to life again. I was ready to go home.
