I think the worst thing

is that I shall become an anecdote

a small story of no real significance

shared with his new lover over breakfast 

or in the car on the way to work 

a half heard intermission 

‘You’ll never guess...’

a shared confidence 

of broken intimacy

an eyebrow raise and a giggle 

and then perhaps a kiss goodbye
