A final fling from flavonoids,
and orange of carotenoids,
anthocyanins adding hues
of deeper red or purple-blues –
a dashing beauty to the trees
before the coming dearth
and icy freeze,
when seeds of life, within the earth
lie shielded, warm
through winter storm.

Thinks, Di. I used to try to memorise things in verse when I was young!

We aren't quite in Wales here, but it has been extremely windy. I hope there are leaves left to still give us a bit more of a show afterwards! Rhiannon

Thanks! I like alliteration in various forms, and it was the first line that set me going on this one, came into my mind after I'd read something about the sudden dazzle for the trees in autumn after their green days.
I'm pleased that the lifting of the spirit by the autumnal displayand its 'energising' colours came through!

Hi Rhiannon,

I liked this one with its strange vocabulary, encapsulating as it does the colour of autumn trees. Must to the dictionary now for a fuller elucidation.

Thanks, Hilary. It's just the chemical names of the compounds, pigments, that give the leaves their colour, and show more when the green chlorophyll leaves the leaves as well. Let me know if anything still not clear! Rhiannon

This is such a great beauty of a seasonal poem Rhiannon. You conjured up those Autumn colours perfectly, as the poem leads the reader to the rest that lies beneath the earth once Winter comes.

Beautiful, Rhiannon.  I'm just reduced to saying, 'Aren't those browny goldy reddy leaves beautiful'!  With these winds it's all a very autumnal swirl at the moment.

I have always enjoyed using alliteration at the beginning of words or inside when seems to give a nice mouthful to a line, if it seems appropriate, mabe adding a bit of 'music'! Welsh poetry has stilted forms of verse using patterns of consonants and rhyme! Rhiannon

Yes, it doesn't surprise me that you are good at alliteration.  You are a true poet.  You see and cleverly express what you see which helps me no end. I think I just don't have a poetic soul but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy the work of people who do have the necessary ability
