Waiting for Morpheus

At night, in bed, I toss and turn
and find it hard to go to sleep.
Without success I try to read
a Number-one best-seller book
which is all about violent crime.
I'm wide alert and my eyes burn,
I focus hard on counting sheep.
A shepherd will cautiously lead
the flock over a bubbling brook
whilst the sheep bells chime.
Waiting for Morpheus to return
I feel that I could start to weep
if my request does not succeed
and that god does cock a snook
keeping me awake for all time.
The fold has now gone. I yearn
for a dormancy that's truly deep
and which will be a bliss indeed
after the insomnia that shook
the spirit of a man in his prime.

Love, god does cock a snook.
Love, god does cock a snook. A finely arranged piece about insomnia. Forgive my ignorance but I wasn't familiar with Morpheus, what a wonderful character/god. Perhaps it's because I sleep so well I've never had to think about it too much, I am lucky Morpheus is always at my side. It is a skilful and also dreamy poem.
