Older Men Talking
By Richard L. Provencher
- 1253 reads
like young boys again
gathered ‘round a TV set
in the nursing home
sharing glory-stories
of way back when...
fishing gab was number one
and a fishing hole
no one dared tell about—
spit in a handshake always
sealed the pledge.
Our hot stove conversation
grew us up through
stories about our teen-age years
and freckle-faced girls
followed by careers then
wedding-vows...
but these days we easily tire as
nurse comes round with nightly cocoa,
at this late hour we all together chime...
Oh Oh - bedtime.

Hi Richard, I don't know if this helps.
but these days we easily tire as
nurse comes round with nightly cocoa,
at this late hour we all together chime...
Oh Oh - bedtime.

I rather like Jenny's offering!
In the old people's home I visit, it seems to need someone else to stir memory sharing, and they seem to organise that quite lot. In my visits I have to write down to stir Mum-in-law's memories and they do tend to be very mixed up, but at the same time I'm often talking to her neighbour who is younger, and has veyr sharp hearing and memories. Actually that lady appreciated your poem for Eleanor well, and I hope found it useful. Eleanor at first seemed to like it, but then got a bit confused, maybe partly as the Canadian language wasn't what she was used to! but thanks very much for that anyway, and I think she appreciated the interest, and the love, and encouragement to trust the Lord.
