Loving You

Just before I departed from my teenage years and with a couple of heartbreak girlfriends behind me I travelled on a youth holiday to Switzerland and met a wonderful young girl who was to be my wife.
A holiday romance that lasted as she became not only my wife, but the anchor that held through the storms of life. I nearly shipwrecked our love on many occasions and more than once deserved to be cast away on an uninhabited island for my behaviour. Not that I was always bad; I just wasn’t as good as I should have been and I know it. Yet let me not dwell on the stumbles, rather smile at the sunny days she has brought and we have shared as equals.
The irony of choosing ‘Loving You’ by Fergal Sharkey would be lost to all if I did not explain its first impact on me. Back in 1985 my wife and I were going through a torrid time. Unfortunately opportunities presented themselves to stray from the path. I look back now with different eyes. At the time I was blinded and infatuated. The song is a beautiful one and speaks of tender love. I thought I had seen a vision of it and nearly destroyed our lives. I would listen to the 45 again and again. Being a romantic can be tough and I found it hard to shake off the yearning.
Thank God I didn’t make that fatal mistake or take that step made by so many fools who pass through a door that has no return – a one way ticket to an emotional graveyard. We made it, or should I say my wife’s patience, loyalty, forgiveness and love – yes love triumphed over seemingly insurmountable odds.
I listen to ‘Loving You’ often now, but it is with a heart that soars as I picture the one true love of my life………….my wife.
Ignore the words from Love Story spoken by Ali McGraw. Love means saying sorry and meaning it. True love has power; the power to mend, heal and nurture.
