Coal and soot and the sky at night
(before the moon has risen to shed some light),
the patches on a panda,
dark stripes across the zebra,
the telly when there’s nothing on,
liquorice sweets on your lips and tongue,
a blackbird or a crow,
gorilla in the zoo,
the piano keys that are sharps and flats
the feathers on a penguin’s back,
the letters on this page
– they all are …
Black!

well done thinking of a panda! And putting in about penguins having feathers, would make a child wonder about how they are so good at swimming, what sort of feathers they must be? And to go from a blank telly, having no meaning to the words of the poem holding all the meaning. I always love all the contrasts you find to make your colours so exciting, and how you bring the other senses in too

Love those first two lines. Black is such a mysterious colour and leaves so much to the imagination.

Thanks, Jenny. Glad you liked this. I suppose black seems mysterious because it reminds us of being in the dark, and having to imagine what we can't really see (though it's rarely completely dark!). Someone this morning who is more-or-less blind was telling me of gettng lost in her house momentarily, though she is so used to moving about it, but her husband was around to reorientate her. Rhiannon
