One small little one,
and one for wedlock’s ring,
one middle, one pointing one,
and a just-long-enough opposable thumb.

– so, with the other hand that makes 10!

Then, 70 muscles are needed for all
the things we can do with them, control
accurately intricate delicate movements
and tendons link muscles in our arms with precision,
directed, co-ordinated by specialized brain:
amazing organisation, synchronization, interaction,
programmed production, construction, again.

They claim this evolved by statistically impossible chance
to help us throw a punch
(or use a cup, ingest our simple lunch?)
or aim a spear in defence or fear
to settle a score and win a war –

such flexible fine, adjustable grip
shows intelligent design
incredible skill,
and sets us apart
from mere survival
for sensitive surgery
and superb creativity
of music and art.

Such delicate precision but with such strength. It is amazing Rhiannon!  I worked for an engineering firm a while they wanted to do some image processing stuff you know not your usual arty-farty picture enhancement but also not rocket science really not too much maths. Anyway I said to my supervisor what incredible image processing must be going on in the brain, and I said and to think it's all by chance and evolution!

He agreed yes, but said no it's not, it is by design.

I liked those engineer guys and that and working for them. This was in the time of the dot-bomb. The CEO had some nice slogans too like "avoid the f-up" and "assumptions are the mother of all f-ups". He would know.

Recently, some friends have produced a 'coffee-table' type book called 'Wonders of Creation - design in a fallen world' [Day One Publications], and though brief and with wonderful illustrations it covers so much of the range of complexity throughout all of nature that is so obviously designed, and attempts at gradual, evolutionary explanations are getting more and more contrived and impossible. Concerning the hand, the text mentioned that 'best engineering cable system is very simple compared to the network of tendons in the human hand', and yes the image processing and recall in the brain is humblingly awesome! Rhiannon.

By the way Rhiannon what is a "close reader"? The cherries also puzzle me, you get red and yellow ones and there's sometimes a book too with a gold star? The "great feedback" comments I think I do understand.

Actually, Nolan, I don't know where the 'close reader' button comes from. I think I may put a question on the forum about it. Red cherries are put on by an editor if they find something rather interesting  about a post. It is personal to that editor, and different editors are reading and checking work at different times. So it is subjective and not a prize. The yellow ones are when an editor chooses something as 'pick of the day' – something they'd like to highlight and have found particularly interesting or have particularly liked, so again, fairly personal. The Book with the gold star is for a chosen 'story' or 'poem' of the week, and there is another symbol for a chosen 'story of poem of the month'.

Hope that helps! But I'll enquire about that first question! Rhiannon

Yes, someone may click on that rather than leave a comment, or both. A bit like the 'great feedback' that can be clicked on for a comment that may have been particularly helpful. I don't necessarily think about using that much, but try to reply to comments! Rhiannon

Usually I think of myself as clumsy and bad at maths, but you make me feel that subconciously even I must be an engineer :0) I have heard that it is basic jobs that need no "thinking" but involve handmovement we take for granted, that no AI will ever be clever enough to do because there are so many adaptations needed.

You are brilliant at combining the academic knowledge from your degree into your poems

Is'nt the makeup of the human a wonderful creation? It's only when we really think about it...as in your poem, that we realize just how incredible it really is.
