Burning Bridges

Here is rain.
There is heat.
Scorched earth may not come after battle.
We watch the shadows of exotic beasts
flit across the inferno’s flames
on the flat screen
in the corner.
On the other
side of the world
are people we once knew.
we swipe left through their slideshows:
friendship survives flames but not distance.
We live here.
They live there.
