You can’t cling to something once it has gone.

There will be nowhere to dream soon -
rainbow serpent muted to a creek.
And a koala will not drink the blue mists
of the eucalyptus tree with its bark stripped
and oiled leaves that crackle and
only embolden the flames.
You can't cling to something
once it has gone - splendid fairy wrens
will fade their wings, unbranched,
into an ochred sky as we feed
the scorch of the sun,
and our kangaroo dreams will blacken
and remind us that it's much too late
to cling to something once it has gone.

There will be so many things vanishing soon. A lovely eulogy for those things that we have already lost.

Well done on Pick of the Week, thoroughly deserved.
Best wishes, Luigi

Wonderful. I love the subtlety of this and how you ground it early on in a pre-colonial pre-Capitalist respect for the land. It skilfully calls to mind some of the images seen over the last few days. A poem that does its job well. True art.

Hi onemorething,
Hi onemorething,
let me just first say I can't believe I missed this poem. You describe so well the abundance of beautiful wildlife that's disappearing before our very eyes.
Your love of nature really shines through in your words. I also adore the picture that goes with this poem.
Poignant and beautifully mastered.
Jenny.
