Barn Owls

Barn owls have eaten the moon
in mouse-sized gobbets,
the ghost of its lunar curves
beams from their faces,
bloated,
crater-eyed,
gleams in the gloss
of their embroidered wings and
I wonder if I will be lost
in this new darkness.
But they sail on
to carve waves
in their ocean of night,
savage appetite quelled,
no enquiries made
of their brightened hearts.

Another really brilliant first line - so unusual an image. And your poem fits perfectly with the picture.

Quite an ornithologist, a real connoisseur of the avian environment. I am learning so much about birds from your accomplished poem about our feathered friends. Thanks for that Rachel.

Hi Rachel,
Hi Rachel,
I too love owls, they are such mysterious birds. I loved your line about the barn owl looking like it had eaten the moon in mouse size gobbets, very original and shows how you've studied this beautiful bird.
I remember my first introduction to the owl, it was when I was seven and I watched the film Bambi one Christmas at our school, I just fell in love with this majestic bird.
A very inspiring poem indeed.
Jenny.
