Slog uphill, from Bargain Buys

trolley-tugging a big bag, heart heavy

with world's worries hard to change

till become aware of pigeons, jackdaws,

blackbirds, crossing space road’s made below

as if by flight’s sight willing all weight less.
 

Homecome, welcome, wait on roof and railing

for food flung, then wings’ flurry, skillfull swerve

and sharp eyed hurry. Now through to the garden feeder -
 

before it's finished swinging

from my filling it

small birds throng, spilling

out of bushes, craving oval seeds

grey as chaffinch heads

from sunflower petals, goldfinch bright.

Sky blue tits flash and sparrows cheep

and a robin darts for fallen scraps -

orange among October's leaf-lake light

 

as thought that here's power to make life good

Oh, that makes me realise I must get organised again. We seemed to lose doing it when looking after the in-laws

 What a pleasure, and the birds' pleasure beautirully described! And it sounds like a bright dry autumn day with the autumn colours of the leaves bright – they are probably more advanced where you are. Rhiannon

Thankyou Rhiannon :0) They are VERY  um peckish just now! You are right, it was a gorgeous, mild, bright day today. Leaves turning everwhere now. Not beeches yet though

So beautiful to watch the way they move, the little feathered visitors add so much to our environment. I love the way you've described their movements and how their colours connect to the environment.  I think the sudden change in weather has sharpened their appetite and there seems to be so much competition from squirrels.

Yes! Just this last week, there must be four times as many! Thankyou for the lovely comment Jane. There are no squirrels on the island, which I miss, but just as well as would end up feeding them too

Just love your descriptions of the birds in your poem Di, it sounds like they have a real feast in your garden. It's nice to welcome our feathered friends and your enthusiasm shines through in this poem.

Thankyou so much Jenny :0) There are LOTS! It is costing a fortune. I get a big bag from Bargain Buys and imagine all the birds flying about over my head as I lug it up the hill are telling me to get a move on
