I Give You My Heart

I give you my heart
To wrap in glass
Stash it safely on the roof
Let it freeze
Let the wind toss it
Like flotsam
On a gravel beach
Carry it in an ASDA bag
Bouncing off strangers’ thighs
Leave it on the last bus home
Don’t feed it
Leave it alone
If that sounds like something
You’d never do
If you feel nervous about
Taking it with you
About being reckless
With my vital organ
If you’d rather not remove
The pulpy mess
Inhale metallic fumes
Then don’t kiss me
Here and now
Don’t look at me
I don’t know how
To not give you my heart
Your stuttering loveliness
Brings havoc to this art
This self-centred life
My mid life glory
Worn-in oneness
A solitary story
I absolutely cannot
Give you my heart
So perhaps for now
Let’s keep apart
