Recently I was in a discussion with a group of people, some I knew some I didn’t. The discussion was the spelling of Mum.
Someone older than myself, who I know really well started it off and said, “I have always spelt it Mom,” I added, “I have always spelt it Mum.”
Others then joined in, half it seemed spelt the word Mum and the other half Mom.
Some said, “It’s regional,” Some said, “It depends on your age.”
I said, “I think it is from America, for at school that was how we were taught, Mum or Mummy, and if any child had spelt it wrong to me it just showed they didn’t know how to spell the word.”
Both my Children spell it wrong, Mom. I just see it as a modern day, way of spelling something like the word ‘please’ some spell it ‘pls’ or even ‘plz’.
The discussion went on for a few days, with the spelling for those joining in still 50-50, but I could see it turning a bit ‘nasty’ when I was singled out! So, not wanting confrontation, I just agreed with the person who started the discussion and decided to not carry on in the debate, let her think she has ‘won’ it really wasn’t worth falling out over, my respect for her is too great.
Either way, what a great word. Mum, if you have been lucky enough.

Mum, mom, or ma (in Scotland)
Mum, mom, or ma (in Scotland) as long as the sentments are the same, the spelling doesn't matter much.
