Certain Memories

Certain memories
are ornaments
on a mantelpiece
that summon dust, and
every now and then,
I catch a glimpse of one
in my peripheral vision
from the far side
of a room. The delicacy
of its painted pattern,
chip to the base,
the precision of its form,
all are obscured
over time. Over time,
I do not approach it,
I do not look at it closely,
I no longer pick it up.

Great metaphor
And very perceptive in conveying the way we gradually let many things go from our minds.

yes, memories are like that,
yes, memories are like that, just out of sight (and mind) but then they summon us, or we summon them. I'm never sure which.

This is our Poem of the Week - Congratulations!
I can't think how I missed this before onemore - it is exactly as you say - uncanny how they appear in one's peripheral vision sometimes

Dear Rachel, even if I have
Dear Rachel, even if I have been silent of late, I follow your work closely.
I have often praised your skill and knowledge of the natural world and its parallel to human life.
I have learned a lot from your poems, as well as from your use of the language. I feel that this surpasses all the others and it is my favourite read, to date.
Kind regards, Luigi x

Its seeming simplicity...
...belies intrinsic complexity, really enjoyed reading.
