Instead of throwing money at the sky

wouldn't it be great if there were a race
to zero carbon between the world's most powerful nations?
So much harder to achieve than rockets in zero gravity -
a matter of mere numbers. But as our numbers increase
if we are to survive, we must unpick threads
stitching us into dependence. Seen now as rights,
the gifts of progress are all poisoned, we know this
yet still we gorge, believing politicians will fix it
while keeping everything we like just the same.
This is not a time for short term politics
which can only snip at the Hydra of the status quo.
We need fearlessness with responsibility, far thinkers
able to cut at the roots of these growing threats -
climate change, sickness, hunger, pollution.
Staring into space risks all of life on Earth.
Who would claim the glory of showing every other People
how to thrive cleanly, sustainably, equitably, peacefully?
Are we not really trying because we believe it's not possible
for humanity to act together, too concerned we might give more
than someone else? Who can prove mankind is not defined
by self interest and apathy, incompetence and short sightedness?
Who will rise to the challenge and save the future
of this one and only blue planet, give children Hope?
