Out of the Marches*

Where shall we go to explore and escape?
North to the Shropshire hills
(Long Mynd, Caer Caradoc, Stiperstones …)?
East to Bringsty Common, the Malverns, the Teme valley …?
South to the the plains or gorges of the meandering Wye,
or the peaceful, gentle, Monnow valley?
or West to mid-Wales’ mountains and waterfalls?
– peace, release, beauty and challenge:
we could never exhaust the supply of nooks and crannies
to explore,
or ever plumb the depths of possibilities that these areas have
in their secret store.

*Marches: Wales/England border, especially Herefordshre and Shropshire

I think I would go along with you West to Mid-Wales' mountains and waterfalls, it sounds wonderful.

Some great photos that perfectly go with your nature poem Rhiannon.

Thank you, Jenny. Since we moved here, we have always felt so privileged at the ease of access to such a variety of places, and I felt it good to celebrate that, though at present we are more restricted, but still have our memories and photographs (and poems!). Rhiannon

Thank you, Di, but there are many delightful 'nooks and carnnies' where you are I think, and actually much to give pleasure everywhere I think. The small corners are often neglected and can give big small pleasures! But of course I wanted to point out the variety in the border area here! Thank you for noticing the typo! Rhiannon

Thank you, Hilary. A bit more restricted at the moment, but yes, we've delighted in the range of options, and sometimes unnoticed little places are really good to explore. It was especiaally good when we were caring for elderly parents, one with dementia, and we were allocated respite care for a couple of hours a week, and it was lovely to get somewhere completely different, though with an eye on the clock, but later it was increased quite a bit I think!
