(This Life) Part 2: Webs
By bhi
- 1573 reads
Soft rain last night, (not the pebbles
From my monsooned youth which shattered
upon the flat roofs and guttered
into the open drains, faeces,
of men and beasts, slipping down alleys,
the churning stench hanging long
in the air, drenched into the soil)
its drops caught in the spiders’ webs,
glittering cities built in the night,
threads cast from stem to stem catching
the morning light steaming past trees,
tall, cloud edged, branches still green leafed.
We watch, the dogs and I, entranced,
these jewelled orbs perfectly balanced,
the slight breeze not disturbing,
the coiled spider at ease,
sheltered, waiting for the sun’s beam,
and we are drawn into the pulse,
the earth’s susurration beating
through the grass, the silk, into our flesh,
fostering rebirth after rebirth,
each momentous life captured,
shadows of shadows reflected,
delicate arteries quivering
as the church bells peal a quarter to,
and we, pulled from our reverie,
are drawn onto another thread,
and moved.

"...the earth's sussuration
"...the earth's sussuration beating through the grass.."
Such beautiful phrasing, of course. Nicely done, bhi.

Such beauty
in fierce contrast. A poem I will enjoy coming back to.

I love how you make the spider web like a portal? They always seem powerful, worrying things to me, the evidence of brilliant engineering not human. Your use of "entranced" seemed to have two meanings, not just the spell bound, but also of entrance meaning 'way in', so you went into another time, or awareness of time, of lives in time, through the spider web.
and then strands of time are like threads of web, our lives joined in the structure strung between events like trees
the more I read this the more depth I find :0)
