When I think of X and
When I think of X and Christmas my mind goes back to my son’s obsession with those X-Wing Fighter things that the Hollywood spacemen went about in in Star Wars. They plastic models of them always had wee buttons on them that, when pressed, made a horrible noise. And those sort of toys always came with a sheet of stickers representing windows and fuel caps and the celestial equivalent of a nodding dog in the back window that had to be applied by a responsible adult … or me. The stickering of these and other toys always took up at least a couple of hours of my Christmas Day and could have been avoided if the greedy manufacturers had been prepared to pay an extra dollar a week to the kids who made them in the Vietnamese sweat shops. I bet the Vietnamese dads were all laughing their socks off because they weren’t confronted by this annual chore. I remember once struggling on with Barbie’s camper van well into Boxing Day.
But the X at the end of a message is always nice. I think it means niceness more than it does a kiss, and it needs no explanation. Isn’t it grand that the birds can do this with their feet?
